Whooping Cough

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it’s marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like “whoop.”

As you may know whooping cough cases are on the rise this year and there have been local outbreaks.

It is important to be up to date on your whooping cough vaccine (pertussis vaccine or Tdap vaccine) — we have it available in our office and it is also available in local pharmacies. And it is especially important for adults who will be around infant grandchildren to be vaccinated to protect our young ones — as young children are especially prone to the respiratory effects of the bacteria that causes whooping cough.

It is important to treat a whooping cough infection with antibiotics.
If you have symptoms consistent with whooping cough, call our office or seek medical treatment immediately.
